St Helena - Year 5
Class teacher: Mr Castleton
Teaching Assistant: Mrs Pearman
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to St Helena!
This year we start a new and exciting curriculum for Year 5. This term we will be studying the following topics:
Literacy: Fables, Myths and Legends
Maths: Various topics and time tables (2 - 12 x and divide)
Religion: Gifts from God and Creation
Topic: Ancient Egypt
Computing: Scratch (designing a game using computer code)
Spanish: Senorita Brooks (covering conversation and grammar)
Homework will be sent home weekly on a Friday and will need to be returned to school by the following Wednesday. It will usually consist of a maths activity (Abacus) as well as a literacy or a Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar related (SPAG) activity. We expect children to present their work as if they would in school.
READING AT HOME
In year 5 reading is still very important, may we request that you support your child with reading at least 5 times a week for a minimum of 20 minutes. They will be responsible for changing their book when finished and keeping a record in their reading journals of what they have read, as well as completing activities. Your children will read daily in school and we will try to hear them read as much as we can. Please encourage your child to bring their reading journals into school every day.
PE is on a Wednesday and Friday afternoon (swimming).
Please ensure your child has a PE kit in school at all times. We would encourage children to take their PE kit home to wash at the end of each week and therefore they will not forget their kit. Children will need a PE kit of navy blue shorts, a white t-shirt and plimsolls. They wear plimsolls for outdoor activities only.
We would stress the importance of the children handing their work in, reading regularly and following routines so as to instil good habits for the future.
Your co-operation and support with all of this is much appreciated. Thank you for supporting your children’s learning,
Mr Castleton and Mrs Pearman
